TREconnects us with the energy flowing in our body.

What is TRE ?

TRE (developed by Dr. David Berceli) stands for Trauma and Tension Releasing Exercises: these are seven exercises for the body, which activate the natural reflex of spontaneous movements (also called neurogenic tremors) within the body. This helps to release stress and deep chronic tension in our neuromuscular system. Our nervous system will regulate itself back to a balanced state. It allows the body to pulsate freely thus we can feel more alive inside.

Neurogenic tremors are allowing the body to let go of physiological layers of past stress and traumatic experience. Those inner movements are able to let go of blocked energies (e.g. from fight-flight or immobilisation/freeze responses). It also helps with emotional stress and mental disorders (e.g. anxiety, PTSD, depression, fear). The process initiated by TRE is controlled by the autonomous nervous system. This way even unconsious or forgotten trauma can be accessed and resolved within the body.

The movements often show as some kind of shaking, tremoring, pulsating, rocking back and forth, fidgeting, kicking or the like. TRE may also result in spontaneous sounds associated with a release of tension or emotion, for example laughing, crying, screaming, roaring, yawning or sighing. All of these are signs of the body that it is letting go of past burdens and emotional baggage – it can actually feel very liberating. Since everyone is carrying different experiences of life, the tremor pattern can be different and unique for every individual person.

TRE is meant to be as a self-help technique and can be activated as needed anytime. It is a natural reflex of the body. Sometimes even a few minutes of shaking can have a great effect on our awareness.

To put it another way, TRE  is a simple method of activating the flow of life (sometimes called Qi, Prana, Kundalini). It helps to let go of the energy flowing in our body so that it can move freely.

Autonomous movements within the body can allow us to shake off stress and tension. We can feel more free and flexible in our daily living. It also helps us to resolve past fight-flight-energies and other traumatic physical reactions (e.g. dissociation, freeze). Therefore TRE  can be a valuable companion when being on a journey of healing trauma and PTSD. With regular practice it helps to cope with stress, strengthens our resilience and induces states of deep relaxation.
